Over recent years CNC lathe capabilities have increased immensely. In today's average CNC machine shop you'll find both VMCs and CNC lathes, often the VMCs are utilised for both prismatic CNC machining aswell as second-oping.
Second-oping is basically the second operation which is often milling as operation one is turning. This isn't always the case but 9 times out of 10 component manufacture requires both functions to be performed.
Over recent years machine tool manufacturers have developed their CNC lathe/turning centre technology to be equipped to perform the milling operation on a CNC lathe, this in itself carries many benefits as detail here below;
1. Component accuracy
2. Save time on set up
3. Improve component cycle time
4. Reduce floorspace used by machine tools
Component accuracy;
The ability to rely on a machine tool for your component accuracy is far more reliable than a human. Awful as it sounds, human error is always a factor. The technology involved in today's machine tools repeats reliably time after time. Moving a component from one machine to another presents an opportunity for mistakes, using the machine to machine all operations without change-over eliminates this as a possibility.
Save time on set up;
Machining different operations on different machine tools requires additional set-ups, this takes time and costs money.
Improve component cycle time;
This is down to the fact that with no set-up and continual machining, cycle time will be reduced. If cycle times are lower, component manufacture becomes cheaper.
Reduce floorspace used by machine tools;
By eliminating operations, eliminates the need for additional machine tools. You can reduce the quantity of machine tools you require and operate from a smaller workspace.
The ultimate CNC lathe includes a Y axis. This feature means that not only can you just drill and tap outside diameters on the lathe, you can also perform fairly significant CNC milling operations off-centre. A huge benefit when looking at one-hit machining.
Y axis lathes are rigid and are often capable of some fairly hefty milling operations. Using either BMT or VDI tooling, the Y axis function assists on both machining faces of parts and diameters.
Controls such as the Fanuc and Siemens systems have conversational elements within them that assist in the programming of a Y axis. so there is no need to be afraid.
Manufacturers of this type of technology include, Doosan, Hwacheon, Hyundai Wia, Leadwell, Haas, Hurco, Hardinge, XYZ, Victor, CMZ, Eagle and Biglia.
Y axis lathes come in all size types from 6 inch to 20 inch chuck, some of the most popular models include the below;
There are many more and we have alot of these CNC lathes listed in stock and on special offer on MTD, you can see these here
